Newspaper Sculpture
The newspaper sculpture marked my first piece of sculpture. I began with building a newspaper basket with an indefinite end. Before this endeavor, I had stuck to drawing materials for my independent series. I wanted to use my last year at Denison as an opportunity to try as many materials and techniques as possible.
Sewn Crows
Once I had committed myself to working in the stairwell as my studio, I was then able to produce my yarn-wrapped branches and crows. Initially, I envisioned the crows and branches as one entity, but quickly separated them. The branches wrapped in black yarn evolved into something else, repossessing empty spaces I had envisioned for these installations.
My first installation was at the top of the stairwell near the fourth floor. I was drawn to the height of the space and how it would present a challenge for me to install. For my next piece, I wanted to break away from the typical tree form, by wrapping the branches to conceal their separation.
